The Winnipeg Police Service is warning the public about a growing number of counterfeit Canadian banknotes circulating throughout the city.
Since the beginning of the year, the Financial Crime Unit (FCU) has seen counterfeit reports more than double, leading to the seizure of approximately $12,000 in fake currency during the first quarter alone.
The counterfeit notes closely resemble legitimate polymer banknotes and often include security features that make them difficult to identify.
However, they can be distinguished by the words “prop money” printed in reverse in small black letters along the holographic strip and embedded within the holograph itself.
“These notes are highly deceptive and could easily pass for real currency without careful inspection,” the FCU stated. The fake bills, seen in $20, $50, and $100 denominations, have so far been traced to serial numbers ranging from GJR6710018 to GJR6710022.
Residents are encouraged to examine their cash closely and look for key warning signs: subtle color differences, worn images, creasing, paper-like texture, or a holographic strip that isn’t flush with the note.
Anyone with suspected counterfeit currency is urged to contact their financial institution or consult the Bank of Canada online for verification guidelines.
