Man sexually assaults elementary school child at North End playground, Winnipeg police say

By News Staff

Winnipeg police are looking for a man who allegedly sexually assaulted an elementary school child at a North End playground Saturday evening.

The Winnipeg Child Abuse Unit says a man approached two children at a school playground on Flora Avenue near Salter Street around 5:15 p.m.

Police say the suspect first made sexually explicit comments, then allegedly “grabbed one of the children and touched her in a sexual manner.”

The child broke free, according to police, and both children ran home to tell an adult, who called 911. Neither of the children required medical attention, WPS says.

Investigators believe the suspect is in his 20s.

“Police notified the school and understand that the school will be following up with correspondence to parents/caregivers regarding student awareness and safety planning will follow,” police said in a news release.

Anyone with information is asked to call 204-986-3296 or Crime Stoppers 204-786-TIPS.
