Premier Kinew addresses province will update on paramedic training and Port of Churchill

Premier Wab Kinew made his state of the province address in Brandon on Thursday, where he announced an investment in paramedic training in the Westman region. Eddie Huband reports.

Premier Wab Kinew made his State of the Province address in Brandon on Thursday, where he provided a number of updates, including an investment in paramedic training in Wesman, and the latest on the Port of Churchill.

The big announcement of the day was a $115,000 investment to add 32 new primary care paramedic training seats at Assiniboine College in 2027, with the first cohort starting in Dauphin.

“This new announcement is going to help folks who are already emergency medical responders become fully credentialled paramedics, which will be good, but also you probably have folks in smaller communities around the province who maybe can’t uproot and move to Winnipeg or Brandon, but maybe they’re in Grand View, Gilbert Plains, you name it, and they can go to Dauphin,” said Premier Kinew.

Premier Kinew also addressed environmental concerns about the proposed $3 billion dual-fuel combustion turbine facility in Brandon.

“They key word with net zero is net, sow we are going to have an impact with the combustion turbines, but we’ll offset it in other areas, things like the seal river indigenous protected area comes to mind as we do conservations over here at the same time that we’re going to be working on energy projects over there, one thing folks should also keep in mind is the combustion turbines don’t fire year round they just fire when we need the extra power,” said Kinew.

Lastly, the premier touched on recent talks with Prime Minister Carney, who wants to see liquified natural gas being exported from the port of Churchill by 2030, highlighting how the expansion of Churchill will impact the economy in the western Manitoba region.

“It’ll really supercharge Manitoba’s economy, and being here in Brandon today, the message is, well, if we’re moving western Canadian resources to Churchill, that journey is going to start in southwestern Manitoba, so that’s going to be great for the oil patch in our province, that’ll be great for Brandon as the hub in our region.”
