The family of a young Winnipeg father gathered at the intersection of Notre Dame Avenue and Isabel Street on Thursday afternoon, two years after 23-year-old Leo Amos Caribou was stabbed by an unknown suspect.
“Heartbreaking, it’s so hard. Like I said last year, I’ve never seen pain in a child, like I’ve seen in my own child,” said Taylor Kowalenko-Caribou, Leo’s fiancée.
Caribou was killed in Winnipeg after police said he was confronted and stabbed by a man at the rear of a multi-unit dwelling house on May 14, 2024.
Two years later, his fiancée still has no answers. She says without the full story, they will never be able to start healing.
Kowalenko-Caribou also urged Winnipeg police to release CCTV footage of the incident. She hopes their calls for justice will be heard.
“We are just demanding answers from the Winnipeg police. We haven’t got much discussion from them, much words from them. And just no closure, no arrest has been made. Two years is a long time without closure, without justice. Nobody deserves that,” said Kowalenko-Caribou.

CityNews reached out to Winnipeg police for an update, but there are none at this time.
Following her personal tragedy, Kowalenko-Caribou joined the movement to call for missing and murdered Indigenous men and boys, and added that the violence against Indigenous men has to be spoken about more.
“We need to do more for our men and our boys. There is so much going on around for missing and murdered women and girls. And you know what – our men and boys matter too. His name needs to be spoken, there has to be justice for Leo,” said Kowalenko-Caribou.
The 23-year-old father also left behind three children. Kowalenko-Caribou says her eldest daughter still asks what happened to their father.
“She asks all the time: ‘Did they catch the people who hurt daddy?’ and it breaks my heart to constantly have to tell her, ‘No, they haven’t found them yet.’”
