Stabbing at Elmwood home linked to gang activity: WPS

By News Staff

Winnipeg police allege the suspect and victim in an altercation that led to a stabbing Friday in Elmwood knew each other through gang affiliations and drug subculture.

The Winnipeg Police Service says around 1:30 a.m., officers were called to Harbison Avenue West near Roch Street for the report of a man who had been stabbed.

Officers arrived to find a 33-year-old with upper-body injuries. He was taken to hospital in unstable condition and later upgraded to stable.

Investigators believe the suspect showed up to the victim’s home and pointed a gun at him.

“The victim was successful in disarming the suspect of the firearm; however, he was stabbed in the upper body by the suspect, who had now armed himself with a knife,” WPS said in a news release. “The firearm was not discharged during the incident.”

Police say they located the suspect, with the help of police dogs, on Washington Avenue near Roch Street. They allegedly found a loaded gun nearby and believe the suspect discarded it while fleeing.

Rushawn Riel McManaman, 44, of Winnipeg was charged with weapons and firearms-related offences, police say. He was detained in custody.
