Wildfire smoke keeps northern Manitoba under air quality warnings

Air quality warnings remain in effect across parts of northern Manitoba as smoke from several out-of-control wildfires continues to reduce air quality and visibility.
Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) says wildfire smoke is creating hazardous conditions in several northern communities and is advising residents to limit time outdoors, particularly those most vulnerable to smoke exposure.
The remote community of O-Pipon-Na-Piwin Cree Nation was evacuated on June 26, forcing about 600 residents to leave their homes as nearby wildfires threatened the area.
Across Canada, nearly 1,000 wildfires are currently burning, with more than 200 classified as out of control.
On Sunday, Prime Minister Mark Carney described the situation as “one of the most intense wildfire seasons in Canadian history,” attributing the conditions to extreme heat and record-breaking dry weather.
Officials continue to urge residents in affected areas to monitor local emergency information and follow evacuation orders and public health advice where applicable.
