Winnipeg video game store’s petition against Sony going viral

A local Winnipeg video game store is going toe-to-toe with Sony after launching a petition fighting back against the company’s decision to discontinue physical discs starting January 2028.
On July 1, Sony announced that all PlayStation games will be released digitally, citing the industry’s shift away from physical media.
PNP Games felt that somebody needed to step up. Their petition has garnered support worldwide, with now over 335,000 signatures.
“It’s bigger than we could have ever thought it would be; it’s just huge,” said Dan Boissoneault, the business & community developer at PNP Games.
Boissoneault has been working in the gaming industry for 30 years. He’s frustrated with Sony and believes their decision could be a big mistake, especially for future generations. He says there’s no avenue to pass things on, and if you have a digital licence for a game, you don’t own it.
He says without physically owning a game, at any moment Sony could decide to remove the game from a server, even if you’ve already paid for it.
“To be able to just say, ‘Oh sorry, that’s not yours anymore. Nobody can have it anymore,’ could be a huge loss,” Boissoneault explained.
Boissoneault said that they haven’t heard anything from Sony in response to the petition, and when CityNews reached out to the company for a comment, we did not hear back.
“Your best customers want to see physical games. They want to see physical media. We know you’re one of the companies that has the hugest history in making physical products. We just want to keep seeing that because you are really good at doing it, and we hope you continue doing it,” said Boissoneault.
