Between 15-25 centimetres of heavy snow is expected to fall on parts of southern Manitoba beginning late Tuesday afternoon.
Environment Canada says a significant late-season Colorado Low will bring strong winds and blowing snow, leading to reduced visibility.
The snow is expected to fall until Thursday morning.
The southeastern portions of the province are slated to receive the most snowfall. The Red River Valley should receive about 10-15 cm of snow while western Manitoba will get 5-10 cm.
Environment Canada is predicting strong winds up to 70 kilometres per hour in the Red River Valley and southwestern Manitoba.
“Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve,” the weather agency said in its weather alert. “Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions.
“Public Safety Canada encourages everyone to make an emergency plan and get an emergency kit with drinking water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit and a flashlight.”
City of Winnipeg monitoring storm
City crews in Winnipeg say they are monitoring road conditions and are ready to apply salt on roadways, as required.
The city says snow accumulation will also be monitored.
No winter parking bans were in place as of Tuesday afternoon.
“Motorists are reminded to drive to conditions and to use extreme caution when driving near heavy equipment,” the city said in a release.
