Armed man barricaded in shed shot dead by officers in northern Manitoba: RCMP

Manitoba’s police watchdog will investigate after a 63-year-old man was shot dead by Mounties in northern Manitoba on Sunday afternoon.

Manitoba RCMP say the man barricaded himself in a shed with a firearm at a home on Kinosao Sipi Cree Nation, also known as Norway House, around 3:35 p.m.

Officers were told the man had earlier made threats to harm a person within the home.

“With the assistance of crisis negotiations, officers were able to communicate with the suspect and attempted to de-escalate the situation,” police said in a news release.

Those negotiations lasted nearly four hours, at which point “a confrontation occurred with the suspect,” who was shot and killed by police.

In its own media release, the Manitoba Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) says an officer fired his weapon once the man exited the shed male later exited the shed with a firearm.

Norway House is about 450 kilometres north of Winnipeg.
