Police watchdog says Winnipeg officer not responsible for fatal April crash

Manitoba’s police watchdog has determined no criminal action will be taken after an investigation into a fatal collision in Winnipeg this past April.

The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) said on April 9, an officer attempted to conduct a routine traffic stop at Selkirk Avenue and McKenzie Street.

Reports at the time stated the driver the officer was trying to pull over failed to stop, lost control of their vehicle, and drove into a post. They were taken to a hospital where they died from their injuries.

Throughout months of investigation, the IIU and a civilian monitor obtained radio transmissions, dispatch reports, GPS records, and video footage from various locations, among other materials.

Both the IIU and the civilian monitor determined the actions taken by the Winnipeg police officer trying to conduct the traffic stop did not cause the collision.
