Winnipeg’s running community is left shocked and concerned after a man in his 40s out for a jog in St. Vital over the weekend was stabbed and left with a serious injury.
“The fact that it happened here in Winnipeg hits home. Right? It’s close to our hearts, and it’s one of our people. One of our runners. Any runner is one of our runners,” said Shalom Capitly, lead of the Dash n’ Dine Run Club.
Winnipeg police say the man was running on Abbotsford Crescent when he was approached by two individuals. They initially asked for the time, but then began threatening him, eventually leading to the assault.
“If I’m being completely honest, I got scared. I’m pregnant, I have a kid, and the first thought is what might happen to other runners, especially in the summertime where everyone is running right,” said Capitly.

Capitly helped co-found the Dash n’ Dine Run Club a little over a year ago. She’s nine months pregnant, but that hasn’t stopped her from getting her mileage in, and neither will this.
“When things like this happen, you can get shaken up; people, runners alike, can get shaken up. But I think moments like this is when we realize how important community is and why being in a run club is important and fun because it just adds another layer of safety for those that want to continue running, that want to start running as well,” she explained.
If you’ve ever gone for a jog in the city, you’ve likely run into Junel Malapad. He’s been running for 19 years and is a staple in the fitness community. He echoes the same sentiment as Capitly.

“It’s a horrible thing. The feeling that I get from that is, first of all, right away I feel you’re not safe to go anywhere, but that’s not true,” said Malapad.
“For many, many years I run with people. It’s important for me to run with people. We support each other in safety, you know, running in numbers. Is best”
