Police say two men who were outside their vehicles on the side of the highway in southern Manitoba are dead after they were hit by another vehicle on Friday evening.
Pembina Valley RCMP say a 44-year-old man and a 73-year-old man – both from Winkler – were killed in the collision on Highway 428 near Road 19 North, in the RM of Roland.
Police allege the 44-year-old had driven his car off the road and into a ditch; the 73-year-old was the driver of one of two trucks that stopped to assist him.
While the men were on the side of the highway, police say a 17-year-old girl swerved to avoid the truck that was in her lane, clipped one of the stopped trucks, went off the highway and hit the back of the car that was already in the ditch.
Authorities say the teenager did not immediately recognize the trucks were stopped on the road.
The teen and her passenger, also a 17-year-old girl, were taken to a health centre as a precaution.
An investigation is ongoing. Police say road conditions were icy at the time of the collision.
The RM of Roland is about 90 kilometres southwest of Winnipeg.

In a separate fatal collision, Oakbank RCMP are investigating after one person was killed.
Police say the two-vehicle collision happened shortly after 7:50 a.m. Monday just outside the Winnipeg city limits, near the intersection of Fermor Avenue and the Perimeter Highway.
