The Manitoba government is celebrating extraordinary Manitobans. People whose courage, resilience, and dedication have made a lasting impact on their communities, and for one of the recipients, their service has truly stood the test of time.
“Fortunate to come home, and we think about the fellas who didn’t make it, and that did a lot of service. So, actually, you were given the job to do, that was everybody’s position. You were given the job to do,” said World War II gunner, Len Van Roon.
Van Roon was one of three participants who accepted the newly minted Circle of Honour Madalin at the age of 103.

“It’s very nice for the community and that to recognize,” said Van Roon.
MLA for Waverley, David Pankratz, added, “Today, at 103 years young, Len still carries himself with the steadiness of someone who has seen the world at its hardest and still chooses hope. Congratulations, Lenord Van Roon.”
The award, handed out for the first time ever in 2025, recognizes individuals who embody the spirit of service and unity. Premier Wab Kinew said this recognition of Manitobans is critical.

“Len, Kin, and Justin, first of a kind,” said Kinew.
While Van Roons’ award has been a century in the making, each recipient’s story is unique, but all share a common thread: an unwavering commitment to helping others, with Kim Wilton and Justin Woodcock being the other two recipients.
The premier said these types of awards ensure their bravery and courage are never forgotten.
“Congratulations on behalf of the province of Manitoba to you. To everybody here in uniform, everybody who served, thank you for you’re service,” said Kinew.
