Wildfire smoke advisory issued for Winnipeg as heat builds

With smoke blowing west from the Ontario wildfires, Many Winnipeg residents say they’re keeping a close eye on air quality, after a high-risk smoky day on Thursday. Eddie Huband reports.

Wildfire smoke drifting from northwestern Ontario prompted an air quality advisory for Winnipeg Friday morning, with officials warning of poor air quality and reduced visibility.

Conditions are expected to improve through the day, but smoke levels can change quickly. Residents are encouraged to limit time outdoors, especially seniors, young children, pregnant people, those with chronic health conditions and outdoor workers.

Friday’s forecast calls for a high of 27 C with a humidex of 33 and lingering local smoke. The heat will continue to build over the weekend, with highs of 29 C Saturday and 32 C on Sunday.

Officials recommend keeping windows closed when possible, using air filtration indoors and wearing a well-fitting N95 respirator if outdoor exposure cannot be avoided.
