Six Winnipeg sports figures – four Jets and two Blue Bombers – are among those lending their names to city snowplows this year.
The City of Winnipeg’s “Name that Plow” contest winners were unveiled Tuesday, and it’s clear the city’s sports scene inspired entrants and voters alike.
Slosh Morrisey, Mark Shovele, Hellebuycket and Kevin ShovelSnowOff are four of the Winnipeg winners named after Jets players Josh Morrissey, Mark Scheifele, Connor Hellebuyck and Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff.
Grady Oliveira and Melt Stegall honour current Bomber Brady Oliveira and Winnipeg football legend Milt Stegall.
Those creative names and eventual winners were among more than 1,700 entries to the city’s inaugural contest. That list was then narrowed down to 51, and Winnipeggers cast their votes among those.
“Thank you to all the Winnipeggers who brought the creativity, humour, and local references to our first ever Name that Plow contest,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham. “The submissions were incredible and the names are a fun way to celebrate the hardworking crews who keep our streets, sidewalks, and pathways cleared all winter long.”
The other six winning snowplow names are Dancing Blade, Emperor Plowpatine, Sled Penner, Greg, Winnie the Plow and Mr. Plow.
The names will be displayed on the side of 12 city-owned snowplows.
