Winnipeg homeowner calling on City to fix a flooding problem in back alley

A Winnipeg homeowner in the Windsor Park neighbourhood is frustrated after he claims the City of Winnipeg recently came to clear flooding in his back alley, but only ended up pushing ice around, making it difficult to get his car out. Now, he’s left wondering who’s responsible for fixing the problem.
“This is bad, in the summer it’s just as bad, you know it’s a constant year-long issue, and for that few months in the winter where it’s frozen over, then we’re good,” said Cory Mikulik, a Winnipeg homeowner.
Mikulik has been living in his home since 2019, and every year he runs into the same issues. He claims the city has told him that anyone with a back lane has to clear it themselves, but says that the proper equipment needed to clear the ice efficiently could cost thousands of dollars.
“I don’t have the tools. A snow blower is not gonna cut it. A shovel, I gotta break it up. Maybe with a sledgehammer, I’ll spend hours out here working on it. I don’t know, it just doesn’t seem viable,” he explained.
For Mikulik and his wife, not being able to access one of their vehicles could lead to even more problems.
“We just had a baby ourselves. We’re two weeks post partum, and we can’t get this vehicle out. If I leave, then I know my wife is stranded here, don’t love that,” Mikilk explained.
Mikulik claims he’s made multiple complaints to the city, but it’s always the same story.
“They come clear it, it looks good to them cause it starts flowing for a bit. Then, within a week or one big rainstorm later, we have outstanding water again. It doesn’t really stick to anything they’ve done.”
Mikulik has also reached out to city councillor Matt Allard directly multiple times, but he feels that Councillor Allard isn’t doing enough.
In a statement to CityNews, Councillor Allard says
“My office received a communication relative to the matter of flooding on the road in front of a home. My office duly reported the matter to the public service, and we are awaiting a response. As soon as I receive a response from the public service, I will share it with any and all interested parties.”
