Winnipeg police say a 22-year-old man has been charged for allegedly trying to smuggle a gun, which led to the seizure of cocaine.
WPS says on Feb. 25, 2026, a taxi driver reportedly found a case containing a loaded Glock handgun in the rear seat of his cab after a man removed it from his backpack and forgot it in the cab when he exited.
The firearm, which was also found with an extended magazine and 9mm ammunition, was turned over to police, and the Firearms Enforcement Unit began an investigation.
Over the course of the investigation, police were able to identify a 22-year-old man who was believed to be connected to the firearm and an address also believed to be connected to the individual.
On March 20, WPS and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) executed a search warrant at the address, where they were able to find and seize 23 grams of cocaine, 124 grams of crack cocaine, and cell phones.
Markus Jerome James North has since been charged with multiple firearms-related, drug trafficking, and failure to comply with conditions of release order offences. He was also arrested on the strength of two warrants of arrest for failing to attend court.
