A man in his 40s was killed and three other people were injured in a house fire in Winnipeg’s Lord Roberts neighbourhood on Monday afternoon.
Winnipeg police say the man was found dead inside the home on Nassau Street between Walker Avenue and Kylemore Avenue.
Three people managed to evacuate the home on their own — a man and woman in their 60s and a woman in her 30s. All three were taken to hospital — one in unstable condition and two in stable condition. They have all since been released.
“Just a realization about how quickly someone’s life can change. You know, I think it was 15 minutes, and you knew that the house was gone,” said Nancy Maskus.

“It’s just devastating. I can’t imagine losing everything. I’m just wondering if there’s some sort of community donation thing we can put together, or I can join to see if there’s anything I can do to help,” said Ashley Allard.
Winnipeg firefighters were called to the house around 1:05 p.m. and arrived to find heavy smoke and flames. Winnipeg police were notified around 1:30 p.m.
“I saw it as it started yesterday,” said Fisher Wohlgemut, who lives across the street.
“There’s a gentleman who lives on Bearisford who was out and trying his best to find out what was going on. The neighbour came out just after me. And we walked right outside, and the whole porch was in flames. The guy was on the phone with EMS. And so we were just trying to figure out what was going on,” Wohlgemut explained.
“There was a lady crawling out the window, we’re trying to convince [her] to jump out. Like, you gotta get out. She felt like she was not in great shape, but we managed to get her out into a warm car. And then it was just waiting for EMS to arrive, and the whole thing was just going up. It was going up fast. You don’t think it goes up that fast. But it went. It was crazy.”
Fire crews attacked the flames with hose lines and used a ladder truck to spray water from above, as the WFPS explains firefighters needed to switch between offensive and defensive strategies as conditions changed.
The blaze, which is under investigation by the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service and the WPS major crimes unit, was declared under control at 4:14 p.m.
The home sustained significant damage from fire, smoke, and water.
