New cricket facility opened in La Barrière Park

The City of Winnipeg and the Manitoba Cricket Association officially opened the La Barrière Park Cricket Fields on Saturday.

The MCA has leased the new fields, which were built on the property purchased by the city.

Redevelopment began in 2018 with the construction of one high-performance cricket pitch. The site has since grown to feature three high-performance pitches, four practice nets, a batting cage, three shade structures, and more than 100 trees.

“What I’ve taken from these years building this cricket facility is that Cricket is far more than just a game, it is a powerful bridge that brings diverse communities together through a shared passion and friendly rivalry,” said Janice Lukes, the city councillor of Waverley West.

Since the project began, more than $1.1 million from a combination of individual ward councillor funding and City of Winnipeg Land Dedication Reserve funding has been granted to the Manitoba Cricket Association for the project.

Additional funding was provided by the Province of Manitoba.
