Well-known Winnipeg hairstylist killed in Cuba remembered as dedicated, passionate person

A Winnipeg family and a community are in mourning after a man was killed while abroad in Cuba.

Rui Andrade, a well-known hairstylist who lived in Winnipeg, died in Varadero, a resort city on the Hicacos peninsula, on March 2.

Global Affairs Canada confirmed they are assisting the family in the wake of the tragic death.

Describing the incident as “a robbery,” Andrade’s brother Paulo said in a series of Facebook messages the man was the victim of what appears to be foul play.

He said Andrade was found in the peninsula city with a “deep cut on his left arm” that hit an artery, and said he died shortly after being taken to a local clinic by ambulance.

“He was robbed and this person took his life away,” Paulo said.

Andrade’s family is asking people to refrain from spreading rumours or misinformation about the incident, as they are still waiting for information from officials.

In a Facebook message, Paulo says there have been no arrests, and they’re still waiting for more information from Cuban authorities.

In a statement sent to CityNews, Global Affairs Canada said it is aware of Andrade’s death and that consular officials in the country are “providing assistance to the Canadian citizen’s family.”

Andrade is also being mourned by those he worked with, as a post on the Aura Hair Group’s Facebook page detailed how he was a well-loved member of the their team who was dedicated to the craft.

“It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Rui, a cherished member of the AURA Hair Group family,” the post explained.

“Rui dedicated many years to our team, bringing passion, kindness, and undeniable talent to everyone who sat in his chair. His warmth and laughter will be deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and the clients who trusted him with more than just their hair — he was a true friend to so many.”

Those who are mourning Andrade are set to gather on Tuesday at the Assumption Cemetery, located at 3990 Portage Avenue, where friends and family are invited to offer condolences with a celebration of life to follow at Dos Acores on Higgins Avenue.
