Man charged with 2nd-degree murder in fatal stabbing in The Maples

Winnipeg police say a 36-year-old man from a Manitoba First Nation was fatally stabbed Sunday morning.

A 34-year-old man was arrested and charged with second-degree murder; he was detained in custody.

The victim was identified as Kennedy Maxwell Elk. He was a member of Dakota Tipi First Nation who was living in Winnipeg, police say.

Officers were called to Marlow Court in The Maples on Sunday around 3:55 a.m. for an assault. They found Maxwell Elk suffering from serious injuries; he was taken to hospital in critical condition and pronounced dead.

A few hours later, around 9 a.m., a suspect was arrested at a hotel on Portage Avenue near Moray Street.

The homicide unit is investigating.
