Woman killed by freight train in Winnipeg was mother of two, family says

By News Staff

The 38-year-old woman killed after being hit by a freight train in Osborne Village early Monday morning was a mother of two who moved to Winnipeg for a better life, her family says.

Val Valencia, of God’s Lake Narrows in northeastern Manitoba, was walking on the railroad track on Stradbrook Avenue shortly before 4 a.m. when she was hit, according to the Winnipeg Police Service.

The freight train “did not have sufficient time to avoid the collision,” police said in a news release, adding no arrests are anticipated. “The conductor of the freight train remained on scene and spoke with investigators.”

Police are calling the incident “accidental” and say they are not investigating it further.

A spokesperson for the Canadian National Railway Company, however, referred CityNews to WPS, calling them the “lead investigation authority” related to the incident.

Editor’s note: Winnipeg police previously indicated the woman had left a passenger train when she was hit by the freight train. Police now say the woman was not travelling on and did not disembark a passenger train.
