Federal grocery rebates will be issued this summer

The federal government recently said grocery rebate cheques will be going out in just “a few weeks,” but that’s not quite accurate — it’s more like a couple of months.

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) says it’ll be summer before you get your money.
“Pending the enactment of the proposed legislation, the Canada Revenue Agency expects to issue the grocery rebate to eligible individuals in a few weeks, more precisely on July 5, 2023, integrated with the regular July GST/HST credit quarterly payment,” Sylvie Branch with the CRA said in an emailed statement to CityNews.
Excellent news: the House of Commons today unanimously approved the new Grocery Rebate, which will mean about $467 dollars in targeted inflation relief for families who need it most.

In the federal budget delivered in March, Ottawa outlined how much money people would receive if they’re deemed eligible.
“For 11 million low- and modest-income Canadians and families, the Grocery Rebate will provide eligible couples with two children with up to an extra $467, single Canadians without children with up to an extra $234, and seniors with an extra $225 on average,” the federal government’s budget said.

Overall, the government says the one-time affordability measure would cost $2.5 billion.
In the lead-up to the tabling of the budget, federal Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland had promised targeted inflation relief for low-income Canadians.
