Manitoba First Nation Police officer charged for assault while on duty: police watchdog

Manitoba’s police watchdog has charged an officer and a former officer following an investigation into an alleged assault.

On Jan 1, 2022, the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) responded to a call, and upon arrival, they determined there was cause to arrest an individual.

The next day, the individual reportedly informed another officer that police assaulted him during transport. The following day the MFNPS reported the incident to the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU).

Following their investigation, the IIU said they requested a review from the Manitoba Prosecution Service (MPS).

Upon reviewing the IIU’s investigation, the MPS recommended charges be laid.

As a result, the constable and the former officer were issued a summons to appear in court.

The charges laid are unclear at this time.
