Manitoba man facing manslaughter charges in 2016 death of infant

By The Canadian Press

A man has been charged with manslaughter in the death of an infant girl from a First Nation in southwestern Manitoba seven years ago.

Virden RCMP responded to reports a two-month-old girl was in medical distress at a home on the Sioux Valley Dakota Nation on Jan. 4, 2016.

The infant was taken to hospital where she died nearly three weeks later.

Mounties say they received new information last spring that helped advance the investigation and lead to charges against a man from Brandon, Man.

Police have arrested and charged Keifer Mecas, who is 32 years old, with manslaughter on Monday.

He was released and is expected to make a court appearance on March 6 in Brandon.
