Manitoba mother whose daughter died in CFS care says she sounded alarm: ‘They just didn’t listen’

The mother of a four-year-old girl who died at a home on a First Nation west of Winnipeg is demanding justice.
The child, whose death Sunday has been deemed suspicious by RCMP, was under the care of Manitoba Child and Family Services in Long Plain First Nation.
The girl was pronounced dead at the scene.
“My daughter is dead and I’ll never get to see her again,” her mother told CityNews.
The girl’s two younger sisters – aged one and two – were taken to hospital, one in critical condition and the other in stable condition. Both were later upgraded to stable condition.
Manitoba RCMP’s major crime services is investigating due to the suspicious nature of the child’s death and her sisters’ serious injuries.
“I just want justice for them,” the mother said. “That’s it. They did not deserve it.”
‘I made them aware months ago’
CityNews is not identifying the mother to protect the identity of the two children who remain in the care of child and family services.
She says her three daughters were taken by CFS last October. She alleges during her last visit in February, her four-year-old daughter had a black eye.
The children were all under the care of Waywayseecappo Child and Family Services. CityNews reached out to the agency by phone and email but did not immediately hear back.
“It shouldn’t have happened,” the girls’ mother said. “I made them aware months ago that stuff was happening with my daughters. And they just didn’t listen to me.”
The office of the Manitoba Advocate for Children and Youth confirmed to CityNews it is aware of the incident but would not provide further comment.
“They are still happy little babies even though the stuff they’ve been put through for the past five months, even six,” the mother said.
Manitoba Minister of Families Nahanni Fontaine says she is deeply saddened by the tragic death of the young girl. She confirmed her department will be carrying out an investigation alongside police.
The mother hopes justice will be served for her daughter, who died just days before her fifth birthday.
“And now I will only get to see her when they take in a casket.”
