3 security guards facing assault charges after Winnipeg Sea Bears’ Teddy Allen injured

Three security guards are facing assault charges in connection with the incident that put Winnipeg Sea Bears star Teddy Allen in hospital last week.
The Winnipeg Police Service says the three security personnel – aged 35, 37 and 58 – were arrested Wednesday at police headquarters. They are facing charges of assault causing bodily harm.
Winnipeg police say they were identified as the suspects in the alleged assault at a downtown nightclub in the early hours of Aug. 3. Officers were called around 1 a.m.
Police say the 28-year-old Allen – though they do not name him in a news release – “was involved in a physical altercation with security personnel.”
Video of the incident circulating online appears to show two security guards with their arms firmly on Allen, pulling him out of an establishment, with a third security guard nearby.
It remains unclear what led to the events that are unfolding in the short video clip, nor what happened afterwards, and Thursday’s police news release did not shed more light in that regard.
Allen needed to be hospitalized with injuries the Winnipeg Sea Bears franchise described, on the day after the incident, as “significant.” The Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) franchise said, at the time, Allen could require surgery.
“I have completed my medical tests, been diagnosed and have now returned home to heal,” Allen said in a statement shared by the Sea Bears organization Thursday.
“While I am not going to go into details right now about my injuries, I do want to acknowledge the Winnipeg Police Service and the investigation undertaken by them. The assault on me should never have happened nor should it happen to anyone for any reason. The thing about my life is that when I’ve been knocked down, I get back up which is exactly what I am going to do now.”
Allen was forced to miss the Sea Bears’ current playoff run, which began with a Western Conference semifinal victory against the Saskatoon Mamba, followed by an upset of the top-ranked Vancouver Bandits in the West final.
“I’m very sorry I was unable to finish the season with the team. We worked together really hard all season and I’m very grateful for everyone’s support,” he said.
“You got to see me at my best and it’s a shame that I had to leave under these circumstances.”
Allen says he is “hoping to be back at it later in the fall,” confirming he will miss the now single-game CEBL championship final Saturday in Winnipeg against the Brampton Honey Badgers.
The Sea Bears are looking to win their first title while the Honey Badgers are aiming for their second championship in four seasons.
“To my teammates, I will be cheering you on hard on Saturday,” said Allen.
