Canada Post’s prices on the rise ahead of holiday season

By James Paracy and The Canadian Press

Canadians looking to ship off gifts for this holiday season may be in for a rude awakening.

Shipping prices are rising significantly because of the increased cost of diesel, resulting in a surcharge on all domestic shipping. The surcharge for the week of Dec. 5 was 37 per cent, while it rose as high as 40 per cent the week prior.

Canada Post spokesperson Phil Rogers assures this is a standard company practice in use for the last two decades.

Although shipping prices are higher than usual, Rogers says Canadians can still expect their parcels to show up on time even with the holiday shipping surge.

Canada Post says it has hired 4,500 additional staff throughout the country to help combat wait times, along with 1,550 more company vehicles.

Deadlines for domestic shipping vary on priority but regular parcels shipped in Canada should be sent between Dec. 9 and 19 to arrive in time for Christmas.

Even sooner is the deadline to ship internationally which varies depending on the country.
