Winter parking ban starting Nov. 26

Due to recent and forecasted weather conditions, the City of Winnipeg has declared the Annual Winter Route Parking Ban will start on Nov. 26, at 2 a.m.

Once the parking ban is in effect, no one will be allowed to park along snow routes or winter routes between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m.

In October, the city announced winter routes would be replacing snow routes.

One of the reasons for the winter route was to allow for the parking bans to go into effect earlier in the year, on Nov. 1 instead of Dec. 1 if needed.

If anyone is uncertain if they are on a snow route, they can contact 311, use the Know Your Zone app or use the interactive winter route map, which can be found on the City of Winnipeg website.

Winnipeggers are reminded that the ban is in place regardless of weather conditions — until the City declares the ban over. Due to this, restrictions apply if it is snowing or not.

Water caution

As it gets colder out, Winnipeg police, as well as Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Services, are reminding drivers to take extra caution around waterways.

“All rivers, streams, ditches and retention ponds within Winnipeg should be considered unsafe at this time,” said Assistant Chief Scott Wilkinson, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS). “We want all residents to stay away from these surfaces and their banks.”

“Avoid areas marked with “Danger Thin Ice” signs, as these are known areas of danger, but falling through any ice-covered body of water could cost you your life. Please take our advice and stay off the ice,” said Ray Duma, Winnipeg Police Service River Patrol Officer.

The warning comes as each year WFPS responds to roughly 150 water and ice calls.
