Worker fatally struck by tree he was cutting down near northern Manitoba town

Police say a 50-year-old man is dead after being struck by a tree he was cutting down while on the job in northern Manitoba.

Snow Lake RCMP say the worker died of his injuries in hospital after the tree fell in a different direction than he intended.

The man was part of a four-person crew involved in the clearing of trees to create a landing zone for helicopters.

Police were notified after Mounties participating in Canada Day festivities at a nearby beach saw a helicopter land in the parking lot of a health centre. A 21-year-old man exited the helicopter and informed police the victim sustained life-threatening injuries.

“The officers, along with local EMS, hospital staff and a Manitoba Conservation officer, assisted in removing the victim from the helicopter where he was quickly taken inside,” RCMP said in a news release.

The accident happened just a couple of minutes away from the beach, by helicopter. Police officers were then transported there to examine the scene.

RCMP are investigating, and Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health was notified.
