Former Winnipeg Mayor Glen Murray running in municipal election

Nearly two decades after resigning as Winnipeg mayor, Glen Murray wants another shot at the position.

Murray, who was Winnipeg’s mayor from 1998 to 2004, announced Wednesday he’ll be running to replace Brian Bowman in the upcoming municipal election.

The Montreal-born Murray resigned as mayor in May 2004 in order to run for a seat with the federal Liberals, which he did not win.

He went on to become an Ontario Liberal cabinet minister.

He also ran for the leadership of the federal Green Party in 2020.

Murray was Winnipeg’s first openly gay mayor, and helped organize Winnipeg’s first Pride march in 1986 prior to becoming a city councillor.

Murray becomes the 11th candidate running in Winnipeg’s Oct. 26 municipal election, joining:

  • Jennifer Motkaluk
  • Don Woodstock
  • Christopher Clacio
  • Rick Shone
  • Scott Gillingham
  • Robert-Falcon Ouellette
  • Shaun Loney
  • Idris Ademuyiwa Adelakun
  • Rana Bokhari
  • Desmond Thomas
