Fire advisory for Winnipeg

WINNIPEG (CityNews) – Winnipeg’s Fire and Paramedic Service are reminding everyone that all burning of fire is currently prohibited.
Section 79 of the Neighbourhood Livability By-law states that a fire cannot be set or maintained in conditions or locations which will or could result in a rapid spread of fire through grass or brushed area. As well, no fire can be set or maintained when the wind exceeds 25 km/h.
This pertains to all open-air type fires including:
• Open fires
• Backyard fire pits
• Firepits in City parks
• Use of solid fuel-burning appliances, including charcoal and wood-burning barbecues
The WFPS issued the advisory due to the wind conditions the city is seeing.
“When conditions are windy, like what we are seeing today (Thursday), the risk of wind-driven wildland fires increases greatly,” said Chief John Lane, in a statement. “It’s imperative that residents closely monitor weather conditions before starting any sort of fire on their property or City property.”
WFPS are also reminding residents to properly dispose of all cigarette butts and never dispose of them in an outdoor plant pot or by throwing them on the ground from a car window or balcony.
Earlier Thursday, the WFPS responded to a significantly-sized grass fire on McCreary Road. Crews were called to the scene at around 10 a.m. and had the fire under control within an hour and a half.
Residents are reminded to call 911 if they see a fire.
