Man stabbed by group of youths at the Forks: Winnipeg police

Winnipeg police say a man in his 40s was stabbed by a group of youths at the Forks on Monday night.
The Winnipeg Police Service says the man was walking through a park at the Forks shortly before 11 p.m. when he was confronted by the youths.
Police say he was stabbed, and the group fled the area.
The man was taken to hospital in unstable condition and later upgraded to stable condition.
Jensen Maxwell frequents the Forks often. She was disheartened to learn about the assault, but won’t let fear dictate how she spends her time, even after dark.
“I mean, obviously the reaction is sadness. It’s pretty sad that people feel, in hearing this, that they are unable to go out and do things and enjoy the spaces Winnipeg has to offer because that kind of instills that fear,” said Maxwell.
“I still feel pretty good about going to the Forks at night. It’s really unfortunate when these things happen, and again I think it’s a matter of meeting people at their basic human need. But I don’t want to let things like that scare me out of experiencing what my city has to offer.”
At the beginning of August, police reported that a man in his 20s was randomly stabbed by an unknown man at a bus stop on Israel Asper Way leading into the Forks.
Francis Pham grew up in the area. He’s been frequenting the Forks his entire life.
“Well, it’s pretty concerning. Considering I walk through this area every day with my dog and sometimes my wife will walk through this area alone as well. But it’s nothing new. It’s not like it’s a super violent place,” said Pham.
He offers this advice if you’re feeling uneasy about visiting the grounds.
“Just be careful. Don’t go looking for trouble, I guess. If somebody comes up to you and tries to get into a fight or get aggressive, just walk away,” Pham explained.
Maxwell added, “Winnipeg is such an amazing place. Please don’t let these things scare you from coming out. These things happen. They happen in every major city. We have such an amazing culture to experience. Don’t let this scare you out of leaving your house and exiting your door.”
The major crimes unit is investigating.
