Swastika spray-painted on wall of vacant mall in Portage la Prairie, tree chopped down

A vacant mall west of Winnipeg was broken into and vandalized this past weekend, including by having a swastika spray-painted on its walls.
Mounties say they were alerted of the break-in at the vacant Portage la Prairie Mall on Monday morning. Police believe one or more people broke into the building on Saskatchewan Avenue West sometime over the weekend.
RCMP say extensive damage was done.
“Most glass pane windows inside the building were broken, a large tree was cut down, the general office and various unoccupied storefronts were ransacked, and graffiti was spray-painted on walls,” authorities said in a news release.
Among the graffiti, according to a photo of the vandalism shared by RCMP, was a swastika.
When asked by CityNews if it was being investigated as a hate-motivated incident because of the nature of the graffiti, a Manitoba RCMP spokesperson said “a motive has not been established.”
The break-in and vandalism is believed to have done $100,000 in damages. Police say it does not appear anything was taken.
RCMP are investigating.
