Winnipeg surpasses federal housing target three months ahead of deadline

The City of Winnipeg says it has surpassed a key federal housing target nearly three months ahead of schedule.

The city says 14,824 new housing units have been approved through building permits since it signed its Housing Accelerator Fund agreement in December 2023.

That surpasses its target of 14,251 units ahead of the Dec. 5 deadline.

“Winnipeg is building more homes, faster, and this milestone is another sign that our work with other levels of government is delivering results,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham. “We are seeing record housing growth because we’ve cut red tape, modernized our processes and made it easier to build the homes Winnipeg families need.”

The city is now on track to receive its final $32.6-million payment from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, pending a final review expected in early 2027.

If approved, Winnipeg will have received a total of $126.5 million through the program.
