Manitoba increases funding for community-development projects

WINNIPEG (CITYNEWS) – The Manitoba government will dedicate $10 million to community-development projects, Premier Brian Pallister announced Wednesday.
As part of Manitoba’s COVID-19 pandemic recovery, the province will support 344 separate development projects under its Building Sustainable Communities program.
The funding is a 25 per cent increase from previous years.
“We are committed to supporting projects that will help build thriving, sustainable communities and a better future for Manitobans,” said Pallister in a release. “These grants will help give community organizations a much-needed boost during this unprecedented time.
“This investment is another way our government is helping rebuild Manitoba’s economy.”
The community projects will include playground upgrades, additional sports equipment, repairs to community buildings, accessibility upgrades and outdoor amenities like nature trails.
Manitoba’s Building Sustainable Communities program was developed to respond to neighbourhood, municipal and regional priorities. It also provides grants to non-profit and charitable organizations, municipalities, and Northern Affairs community councils.
“We are boosting our support for community projects as we work together to rebuild the Manitoba economy,” said Municipal Relations Minister Rochelle Squires. “We know these have been challenging times for many Manitobans, but by working together, we will get through this.”
