CALGARY – It doesn’t take much to drive Twitter into a tailspin and this week a new take on a classic board game is what had the internet abuzz.
Monopoly Socialism has a reduced $50 “living wage” for passing go instead of the $200 payout in the conventional version.
One chance card reads, “You seem to be doing too well for yourself. That’s not how socialism works. Choose one player and take back five of their chips.”
Property is uniquely different–there’s a no-tip vegan restaurant and a dairy-free coffee shop.
And while this version of monopoly seems to be more satire and parody than a serious attempt at creating a socialist version of the game, historian Nick Kapur isn’t laughing.
He tweets he bought a copy of the mean-spirited and woefully ill-informed game so you don’t have to.
Even U.S. Senator Ted Cruz is weighing in.
He tweets Hasbro could do the University edition: you imagine a magic money tree; you give everything free to anybody who wants it; nobody works, studies, or innovates; and everybody gets an A!
Some other people online are getting a kick out of the satirical game, asking where they can find a copy.
