Manitoba budget preview: Personal care home coming to south Winnipeg

Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew provided a sneak peek into next week’s budget on Thursday.
The premier announced a significant investment into seniors, with a new personal care home coming to the south Winnipeg community of Bridgwater.
“Ninety-five million dollars is going to be the investment for this new Bridgwater care home,” Kinew said. “We’re going to take the time this year to reach out to the community in this part of the city and this part of the province to ask what sort of facility this should be, what are the services, what are the amenities that are needed for seniors in this new personal care home.”
Elaine Cowan, who lives in a retirement community in south Winnipeg, says the announcement gives her and other seniors in the area peace of mind.
“Hearing about a new personal care home in Bridgwater is so important and so damn exciting,” Cowan said.
“This isn’t just about building a building, it’s about knowing there’s a place for us when we need that support.”
The new facility will bring around 140 personal care home beds, adding to the 237 beds that are already under construction in other locations across the province.
“We’ve got facilities being built in Lac du Bonnet, in Arborg, and also at the Park Manor Care Home in Transcona,” said Premier Kinew. “So we’re trying to meet the needs of a growing province.”
Manitoba Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara said the first step will be a lengthy round of consultation with community members beginning this summer, with no timeline yet on the completion of the project.
“We’re probably looking at a couple of years at this point, maybe less than that,” Minister Asagwara said. “June we’re going to start the bulk of some of the heavy lifting on consultations. But what I would say is we want this project actually to be completed much sooner than later.”
