Manitoba police watchdog investigates arrest involving serious injuries

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) said it is investigating serious injuries sustained during the arrest of a Winnipeg man on Thursday.

In a press release, Friday, the watchdog said it was looking into the arrest of a man at a house on College Avenue around 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 15, by Winnipeg police (WPS).

IIU said it was notified by WPS officers were conducting a bail compliance check and noticed that he was breaching the conditions of his release order.

“Upon realizing he was being arrested, the male suddenly armed himself with an edged weapon and stabbed himself multiple times while making statements indicating self-harm,” IIU said in its statement.

Police officers disarmed him and administered first-aid measures. He was then taken to hospital in unstable condition.

People with information that can help in the investigation are asked to contact IIU at 1-844-667-6060.
