Rainbow Stage opens 2026 season Thursday night, with Jesus Christ Superstar

Rainbow Stage is set to open its 2026 season this Thursday night, with Jesus Christ Superstar.

For over 50 years, this rock opera has wowed audiences across the world, and it will be the first time it’s performed on Winnipeg’s iconic outdoor theatre stage.

JCS’s production is directed by Sharon Bajer and choreographed by Stephanie Rutherford.

Originally a 1970 concept album, the show is sung through, meaning there is no spoken dialogue. It will take audience members through themes of fame, betrayal, and power, and is known for its contemporary approach to the Biblical story.

Winnipegger Nathaniel Muir, who plays the role of Judas, says there’s nothing like the feeling of performing at Rainbow Stage in front of a hometown crowd.

It’s really cool, being someone who has seen shows at Rainbow growing up, and then to be able to see shows from this perspective, it’s really awesome. Winnipeg is such a supportive, like, close-knit community in the arts especially. I’m also a musician; the local band scene, the rock scene, the theater scene, they’re very supportive of each other. I feel very lucky that even though it’s a small community, it’s got the spirit of a big one, so I’m really happy to be here,” said Muir.

Jesus Christ Superstar runs from June 25 until July 12.
