Winnipeg shelters call for clothing donations as temperatures start dropping

Main Street Project and Siloam Mission are urgently seeking clothing donations to help people experiencing homelessness stay warm and safe. Both organizations say community support is essential as demand grows and supplies run low.

Although Winnipeg has yet to see snow, temperatures are dropping, and shelters across the city are putting out a call for what they need most this winter season.

“Items that are useful for the community that we serve, so comfortable, you know, flexible, so things like sweatpants, sweatshirts,” said Cindy Titus, the interim director of development for Main Street Project.

Siloam Mission, along with Main Street Project, says the most in-demand items right now are warm clothing that can be layered.

“Layering items for the winter season, sweat wicking is really good as well, or moisture wicking items are really good, and those top layers, so things like tuques, scarves, winter jackets, snowpants, ski pants, winter boots, and of course warm socks,” said Titus.

Margot Ross, the senior development manager at Siloam Mission, added, “We are looking for warm, gently used winter clothing, we’re looking for footwear. Folks experiencing homelessness spend a lot of time walking, so high-quality boots and shoes for both men and women would be most appreciated.”

Both organizations are hoping that the community will help as much as they can, including food donations.

“As well as non-perishable stuff. We serve over 1,500 meals a day, 365 days a year. And it happens because we have teams of volunteers, we have almost 1000 volunteers who prep and serve meals,“ said Ross.
