The 38th annual Winnipeg Fringe Festival has officially kicked off on Wednesday, offering theatregoers a wide variety of shows to enjoy, with 145 different productions shows, 93 originals, at over 26 venues across the city.
“If you’re a first time fringer, go through the program and find something that you know you like,” said Chuck Mcewen, executive producer at Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival. “If you like sports, find a play a bout sports, if you like stand-up comedy, pick one of those, if you like magic go to a magic show, there’s something for everybody at the fringe.”
Over the next week and a half hundreds of performers will be showcasing their talents. Melanie gall, who has performed in the Winnipeg Fringe several times, will hit the stage in a one-woman musical, taking a comedic look at Winnipeg, and Manitoba’s unique quirks.
“If the whole point of the show is that we take ourselves too seriously as provinces sometimes,” said Melanie Gall, “hockey sticks and beaver pie”. “I’m from Alberta and there’s a lot to make fun of there, but there’s also things here. I’ve written original music, I’ve also used music from stomp and tomp connors, chantal kreviazuk, from burton cummings, and like I said I’ve written original songs too.”
“It’s a family friendly all ages show, lots of magic, lots of fun, I guarantee you’ll have lots of laughs if you come check it out,” said Sitruc James, “the illusionary magic of Sitruc James”.
James will be headlining the illusionary magic of Sitruc James at prairie theatre exchange.
“Fringe is just a great way for so many different artists from all over the world to come and show up at one place at the same time, and everyone can come out and experience all these different types of art,” said James. “There’s so many shows here, there’s literally something for everyone it doesn’t matter who you are or what your background is, there’s a show that you’re going to love.”
