It was quite the turnout for the second annual 10k walk hosted by Khalsa Aid Winnipeg, raising funds for Seven Oaks General Hospital Foundation, and the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba.
“It’s [not just] the Sikh community that’s going to come out and support this walk today, so it’s everyone coming together to do something good, which I think is very much needed in our world right now,” said Sudhir Sandhu, the organizer and a participant of the Khalsa Aid 10k Walk.
“This walk is really one of the core tenants of Sikhism, to serve our community, and this is a way for us to reach out and raise some money for both Seven Oaks and children’s hospital to make sure that we’re contributing to the community that we live in. So, we’re expecting quite a few people that’ll just do a 10k walk, and the main objective is to raise money for the hospitals.”
The walk was held in Assiniboine Park, with around 100 participants. In the first year of the event, $25,000 was raised; this year, organizers are hoping to surpass that, with the money going towards healthcare equipment and other hospital needs.

“We were the lucky beneficiary of the funds raised, 25 thousand, it allowed us to buy wheel chairs, and something called staxi chairs, mobility devices, which had an immediate impact on not only our patients but our staff, and this event is looking to do more and they’ve also added the children’s hospital foundation so a lot of good stuff is going to come of this,” said Trevor Krahn, the CEO of the Seven Oaks General Hospital Foundation.
City councillor Devi Sharma was also a participant, telling city news of the overarching impact the Khalsa aid organization has around the world, which includes providing support to victims of natural and man-made disasters, from floods to earthquakes, famine, and war.
“It’s a lovely day here, we have a great turnout and still more coming,” said Sharma.
“The community that Khalsa Aid helps has no boundaries. Khalsa Aid helps every member in society who is in need, and they do great work around the world, and the Manitoba chapter here in our province and our city is strong and thriving.”
