Two Winnipeg teens stole $2K worth of cigarettes, bear sprayed man: police

Winnipeg police say a 13-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl were charged after allegedly stealing cigarettes and tobacco products from a business Friday, before using bear spray on a man in the store.

The Winnipeg Police Service says the incident took place around 2 a.m. at a store on Dale Boulevard near Roblin Boulevard.

Investigators believe the suspects stole about $2,000 worth of cigarette and tobacco products from behind the counter when it was left unattended.

One of the suspects then discharged a canister of bear spray at a 66-year-old man.

Officers arrived at the scene to find the man suffering from the effects of bear spray. He was treated by Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service.

Police say they located two suspects nearby – on Westgrove Way near Westfield Drive. They were arrested after a short pursuit on foot.

The 13-year-old is facing charges of robbery, possession of a weapon and failure to comply with condition of undertaking. He was detained in custody.

The 14-year-old girl was charged with robbery. She was released on an undertaking as mandated by the Criminal Code.
