Winnipeggers react as Manitoba standard time takes effect

Winnipeggers adjust to no more time-changes as Manitoba Standard Time was introduced over the weekend. Koby Mitchell reports.

It’s been debated for years, and now, Manitobans won’t have to change their clock. The province officially kicked off Manitoba standard time on Sunday — staying on Central Daylight Time — and some Manitobans already have mixed feelings about it.

“For me I found it better. I wanted this change to happen for a long time. Cause I really appreciate the longer daylight at the end of the day versus at the beginning of the day,” said Karen Lovetri, a Winnipegger.

Seema Seema, an international student, said, “I’m happy it’s going to stay the same. Because every time as an international person, whenever I need to talk to my family, it’s always like I have to make sure of the time. Now I don’t have to worry every six months. There is a 10 and a half hour difference.”

Manitobans waking up Sunday morning might have noticed no time difference between major east coast cities such as Toronto, Montreal and New York, but there has been some concern amongst parents.

“Yeah, I mean I feel like parents are a little bit stressed for our temperamental sleepers. People are making week long plans in advance of adjusting sleep times by 10 minutes here or there,” said Nadine Alblas, a Winnipegger.

The latest sunrise in Winnipeg this year is slated for December 31 with a 9:26 a.m. sunrise, and it means many kids will have to take their morning walk to school in the dark.

“My kids aren’t school age yet. But that would be a concern for me as well. Especially because most of the streetlights aren’t working or properly placed on the walking paths. So that would be a little bit of a concern. They might just need to look into making it a bit safer for them,” said Alblas.

Lovetri says, “For sure. Anything to help make notice, whether it be lighting or any kind of signage. That would definitely be appreciated.”
