3 children struck by vehicle that ran red light: Winnipeg police

Winnipeg police say three children needed to be hospitalized with minor injuries after they were struck by a vehicle that ran a red light, collided with a second vehicle and mounted the sidewalk this week.

The Winnipeg Police Service says it happened Monday around 4:30 p.m. at Pembina Highway and Plaza Drive.

Authorities say a woman in her 70s at the wheel of a Honda Fit was driving west on Plaza Drive when she ran a red light and struck a Ford Fusion at the intersection, causing her vehicle to mount the sidewalk, striking three kids who were with an adult.

The driver, as well as a man in his 80s who was also in the vehicle, were taken to hospital in unstable condition and later upgraded to stable. She was given a ticket.

Around that same time on Monday, in an unrelated incident, Winnipeg police say a man in his 70s was taken to hospital in critical condition after his vehicle mounted a curb and struck a pole at Portage Avenue and Main Street. He was pronounced dead in hospital.

Also that same day, around 5 p.m., two vehicles collided on Sterling Lyon Boulevard in southwest Winnipeg. Two people were transported to hospital in critical condition and later upgraded to stable condition.
