Winnipeg police are asking for your help in tracking down two armed robbers who allegedly stole $300,000 worth of jewellery in April.
In security footage, two men could be seen wearing masks, entering Gatewest Coin on April 29 just before 12:30 p.m.
Video shows one person smashing a display case before putting the jewellery in a bag. The other man can be seen holding a gun by the store’s entrance. The pair stole 190 gold rings, which Jasmine Allen — the vice-president of Gatewest Coin — says was a total value of roughly $100,000. And with them selling them for about triple that, the retail value sums up to about $300,000.
“He had a duffle bag with him, quickly scooped out all of the trays of gold rings that we had. Our smoke cloak went off when we pushed the panic button, and they made their way out,” said Allen.
Allen was a minute out of the store before the robbery took place. There were no injuries reported, but she says her employees are shaken up after the incident.
“For myself, getting the call, of course, the first question is, is everybody OK? I got the yes, but it’s still when you get that news, even when you’re not physically here at the time, it’s pretty shaking,“ said Allen.
“It’s definitely difficult for everybody to deal with because we’ve had some of them have trouble sleeping. Now you’re stuck in this hypervigilant state trying to make sure that everybody coming in doesn’t have hats, doesn’t have sunglasses on. When you’re trying to do a transaction, you’re worried about who’s coming in the store and what you’re trying to do is very difficult.”
Gatewest Coin has been in business since 1972, and Allen says this is the first serious incident that they have had, but it’s not stopping them from continuing their business.
“We wanna make sure that we can keep doing the business that we’ve been doing since 1972. We wanna make sure that we can continue supporting the community back with all of our charity work, and we need customers in the door to be able to continue doing that,” said Allen.
One of the men has been described as wearing a black freezer-style jacket with a “West trans” logo on it, a black neck warmer, a blue “Adidas” hat, white shoes, and black pants.
The other man has been described as wearing a black North Face jacket, a black neck warmer, large leather gloves, white shoes, and blue jeans.
Police are asking if anyone has any information to contact investigators at 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477.
