2 people rescued from Assiniboine River

Winnipeg firefighters were called to save two people who needed help in the Assiniboine River on Monday evening.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service says the pair was in the water near Augier Avenue shortly before 7 p.m.

The WFPS dispatched its water rescue unit and deployed a drone to locate them.

“Firefighters used a throw ball and personal flotation devices to rescue one person. Bystanders in a canoe helped firefighters rescue the other person,” the WFPS wrote in a news release.

Both people were assessed by paramedics on the scene. They did not need to be hospitalized.

The WFPS says it does not know how the people ended up in the water.
