Manitoba teen, 17, dead in highway crash outside Winnipeg

Police are investigating the death of a 17-year-old in a highway crash southeast of Winnipeg on Saturday.

St. Pierre-Jolys RCMP say the SUV driven by the teen from Dufresne hit the ditch and flipped while travelling on Highway 405 near Lorette.

Police were notified at 6:45 a.m., but they believe the crash happened overnight “and went unnoticed until daylight.”

Officers arrived at the scene to find the vehicle severely damaged.

“After a search of the area for the driver, he was found inside the vehicle, concealed by the extent of the damage to the vehicle,” Mounties said in a news release.

The boy was declared dead at the scene.

Correction: RCMP initially said speed and alcohol were believed to be contributing factors in the collision. Police later removed that line from their press release.
