Winnipeg police investigating suspicious North End death

Winnipeg police say a 32-year-old man’s death in Winnipeg’s North End over the weekend is considered suspicious and residents are concerned. Koby Mitchell reports.

Police say a 32-year-old man’s death in Winnipeg’s North End over the weekend is considered suspicious.

The Winnipeg Police Service says Jamie Raymond Asham, a member of Peguis First Nation who was living in Winnipeg, was found dead outside a home on Stella Avenue around 8 a.m. on Saturday.

Officers were responding to a well-being call, and when they arrived, Asham was found dead outside.

CityNews spoke to nearby residents who say they are tired and scared.

Shawna Bratko has been living in the neighbourhood since 2013, and feels that the North End is neglected by the city, and she wants serious change.

“Start taking action; we need more. Get on the streets and come and see these people. Talk to these people. Stop closing your eyes. Cause they need help,” said Bratko.

Her daughter Caitlin Bratko adds, “I would not go here or walk around after dark. Or at a certain time. Due to the safety concerns. The North End has always, to me, been a danger to some people. Specifically women.”

Mynarski Ward City Councillor Ross Eadie says he visits neighborhoods in his ward often and tries his best to help clean up, but that there is only so much he can do to combat criminal activity.

“So the city is providing the same services that they do all over the place. And like I said, the fire paramedics can’t keep up. Police service can’t keep up. I do what I can, but I can’t solve the problem with gangsters. Like what are you supposed to do with gangsters?” asked Eadie.

“It’s not like I don’t care. It’s not like I’m sitting in this office here doing nothing. Every time these issues come up, somebody brings up an issue about a house, I hand it off to the inspector for the area.”

WPS says that the death is considered suspicious and that the homicide unit is investigating.
